Your OneNote notes, as files you own

Mnote exports your OneNote notebooks to ordinary files on your PC, and reads them like a PDF. You can search, highlight, add notes and edit, and everything is saved inside the files.

Features

Read OneNote like a book, keep it like a file

Everything you'd expect from a good PDF reader, made for notes, without any cloud account.

Reads like a PDF

Each notebook is one document, with sections as chapters and pages as sheets. Page numbers, zoom, a contents sidebar, and light, sepia or dark themes.

Highlights and notes

Highlight in four colours, comment on any passage, bookmark pages and add page notes. They're saved inside the file, so they travel with it.

Search everything

Search the text, titles and your own notes across every notebook at once, and jump straight to each match.

Edit your pages

Fix a word or rewrite a section, with bold, lists, headings and checkboxes. OneNote's original copy of each page is always kept.

One file per notebook

Pack a whole notebook into a single .mnotebook file to share, back up or archive. You can unpack it again any time.

Private by design

No account, no upload, no tracking. The reader runs entirely on your PC, and your notes never leave it.

How it works

Three steps to your notes

One small installer. No admin rights, no account, nothing from a store.

Install Mnote

Run the installer. It sets Mnote up for your Windows account in a few seconds, and you can uninstall it in Settings > Apps.

Mnote-Setup-x64.exe

Export from OneNote

Open the OneNote desktop app with your notebooks open, then choose this in the Start menu. Your notes go to Documents\OneNote Export.

Export OneNote to Mnote

Read and annotate

Open Mnote Reader from the Start menu, or double-click any .mnote page or .mnotebook notebook.

Mnote Reader

Rather not install anything? The portable ZIP does the same with three .cmd files you double-click.

Windows may warn you about a new download

The installer isn't code-signed yet. Your browser may ask whether to keep it, and Windows may say "Windows protected your PC". Keep the file, then choose More info > Run anyway. To be sure the file is the one published here, compare it with its SHA-256 checksum. Everything it installs is plain scripts you can read on GitHub.

Download

To check a file, run Get-FileHash .\Mnote-Setup-x64.exe in PowerShell and compare. The list is also in SHA256SUMS.txt.

Install without a window, or on many PCs

Mnote-Setup-x64.exe /quiet installs with the defaults, and /uninstall /quiet removes it again. Neither needs admin rights: Mnote installs for the signed-in user. Run the installer with /? to see every option.

Open file formats

Your notes in formats you can open anywhere

Both are ordinary ZIP archives. Rename one to .zip and everything inside is readable, even without Mnote.

.mnote

One OneNote page

The page in several forms, so nothing is ever lost:

  • page.htmlThe page, readable in any browser
  • page.txtPlain text, for search
  • page.onexmlOneNote's original XML
  • images/The page's pictures
  • annotations.jsonYour highlights, notes and bookmark

.mnotebook

A whole notebook

Every page of a notebook in one file, in its OneNote order:

  • notebook.jsonName, sections and page order
  • pages/…/*.mnoteEach page, as its complete .mnote

Highlights, notes and edits are saved straight into the notebook file. Before packing replaces anything, every page is checked byte for byte.

Requirements

  • Windows 10 or 11, with Windows PowerShell (it comes with Windows)
  • The OneNote desktop app (Microsoft 365 or OneNote 2016), only for exporting
  • Firefox or Microsoft Edge for the reader window
Does Mnote upload my notes anywhere?

No. The reader runs a small private server on your own PC (localhost) that only its window can use. There's no account, no sync and no tracking.

Can I still use OneNote?

Yes. Exporting only reads from OneNote and never changes your notebooks. Export again whenever you want a fresh copy. Your highlights, notes and edited pages are kept.

What about notebooks on OneDrive or a work or school account?

Sign in to the OneNote desktop app with that account and open the notebooks there. Mnote exports whatever OneNote has open, including images, which it asks OneNote to download.

Does it work on Mac or Linux?

Not yet. Exporting uses OneNote for Windows, and the reader is set up for Windows. Exported files are standard ZIP archives, though, so they open anywhere.

Why are there 64-bit and 32-bit installers?

Mnote itself is PowerShell and HTML, so it's the same on every Windows PC. Only the small setup program comes in two builds. Choose 64-bit unless your Windows is 32-bit. The download button picks the right one for your PC.

How do I remove it?

If you used the installer, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Mnote Reader > Uninstall. With the portable ZIP, double-click Uninstall Mnote Reader.cmd, then delete the folder. Either way, your exported notes aren't touched.
